February is known internationally as carnival season. In the lead up to the period of Lent social unity and merriment are celebrated through many large group events, usually held in the street with music and dancing. As we welcome this special time of year to our calendars once again, we take a look at some of the most colorful events taking place across the globe.

Rio de Janerio, Brazil

Date: Friday, February 24 – Tuesday, February 28

Millions of people flock to Rio de Janeiro each year for what is perhaps the world’s most famous carnival. Over the five days leading up to Lent, the city streets transform to a host an upbeat festival, showcasing flamboyant costumes, Brazilian rhythm and exuberant dance.

Parades start flooding the lively New Orleans streets in early January, continuing the celebrations all the way up to the end of February. This year’s lineup includes Chibite Zawose Family, Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band, Wahapahapa Band, among many other local and famous artists.
